Could a diet enriched with n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids be considered a promising way to enhance the immune defences and the resistance of Penaeid prawns to environmental stress? ArchiMer
Chim, Liet; Lemaire, Pierrette; Delaporte, Maryse; Le Moullac, Gilles; Galois, Robert; Martin, Jean-louis.
The prawn Penaeus stylirostris (Stimpson), when fed for 28 days with n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA)-enriched feed pellets, demonstrated an enhanced resistance to variations in environmental parameters (a decrease in temperature and salinity over a 4-day period from 28 degreesC to 17 degreesC and from 35 parts per thousand to 10 parts per thousand respectively) and an improvement in their immune defence potential, i.e. increased agglutination titre of plasma and increased respiratory burst of haemocytes.

Evaluation of microdiets versus live feeds on growth, survival and fatty acid composition of larval haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) ArchiMer
Blair, Tammy; Castell, Fisheries And Oceans Canada; Neil, Steven; D'Abramo, Louis; Cahu, Chantal; Harmon, Paul; Ogunmoye, Kehinde.
Until recently, it was considered impossible to feed newly hatched marine fish species with a compound diet. Substituting a compound diet for live prey was performed several weeks after hatching, depending on the species. Compound diets were well ingested at the early stage but larvae died with a gut full of food, suggesting that larvae were unable to digest the compound diet. The hypothesis was that younger larvae have insufficient digestive enzymes to thrive on compound diets, and that exogenous enzymes, provided from live prey, are necessary for early stages. The organogenesis of marine fish larvae is not completely achieved at hatching and histological studies have revealed that the anatomy of the digestive tract undergoes developmental changes over...

High levels of vegetable oils in plant protein-rich diets fed to gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.): growth performance, muscle fatty acid profiles and histological alterations of target tissues ArchiMer
Benedito Palos, L; Navarro, J; Sitja Bobadilla, A; Bell, J; Kaushik, Sadasivam; Perez Sanchez, J.
The feasibility of fish oil (FO) replacement by vegetable oils (VO) was investigated in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) in a growth trial conducted for the duration of 8 months. Four isolipidic and isoproteic diets rich in plant proteins were Supplemented with L-lysine (0-55%) and soya lecithin (1%). Added oil was either FO (control) or a blend of VO, replacing 33% (33VO diet), 66% (66VO diet) and 100% (VO diet) of FO. No detrimental effects on growth performance were found with the partial FO replacement, but feed intake and growth rates were reduced by about 10% in fish fed the VO diet. The replacement strategy did not damage the intestinal epithelium, and massive accumulation of lipid droplets was not found within enterocytes. All fish showed...

Delaporte, Maryse.
In the context of Pacific oyster C. gigas summer mortality, the present study demonstrated that the reproductive effort reduced not only the energetic parameters (carbohydrates and CEA) but also the immune parameters (concentration, phagocytosis and adhesive capacity of hemocytes). Increasing food supply from 4% to 12% (of oyster dry weight) did not counteract this phenomena as most of the additional energy was dedicated to the gametogenesis processes. However, after the gametogenesis, the 12% diet clearly favored energy storage restoration and hemocyte production. Hemocyte parameters were also modulated by the food quality. Indeed, hemocyte concentration tended to increase 20:5n-3 and/or 20:4n-6 were supplied by micro-algae or artificial diets. When these...
